What is the Pythagorean theorem?

In a right triangle, a² + b² = c², where c is the hypotenuse (longest side).

How do you find the hypotenuse?

c = √(a² + b²). For a=3, b=4: c = √(9+16) = 5.

How do you find a missing leg?

a = √(c² - b²). Subtract the known leg squared from hypotenuse squared, then take the square root.

Does this work for non-right triangles?

No. The Pythagorean theorem only applies to right triangles (triangles with one 90° angle).
